Water temperature stability....

insomnia Aug 06, 2003 08:34 PM

Hi Guys! I have a question about water temperature.

For some reason, my aquarium's water temperature never drops below 75 F degrees. Let me also state that I don't use a heater. I just bought a new thermometer, so I don't think its defective. During the day the water temp. reaches a max of about 80 F and generally drops a few degress by nightfall. Its summer right now, and I live in Toronto, Canada.

Is anyone else's water like this? Shouldn't water normally drop to cold temperatures? I found it very strange that the water keeps itself this warm...

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

It's normal. When my water heats up to 80C during the day, it rarely drops below 76-77C. I do have a heater, but it only gets activated when the water is below 75C. Water temperature is more resistant to change than air temperature.

Alright then, thats good to know. Also, I think you mean F rather than C. 80 degrees C would be boiling!

I sure hope you mean Farenheit because 80C is pretty crazy.. I doubt turtles could live in near boiling water

Yes, yes, I meant 80F not 80C. I used to live in countries that use the metric system, hence the typo... :P

One other thing, if you have a basking area, the heat from that light will help heat your water as well.

water temp usually regulates to between 5 and 15 degree of the lowest air temp
but electronic instruments light filters and articfical lighting can warm it up significantly
especially in a small tank
