Lockable lids for glass aquariums.

jasonmattes Oct 28, 2006 08:21 PM

I've been thinking about this project for a long time, I just never seem to get around to doing it...until today.
This is for a 55 gallon aquarium thats going to house a pair of oreganus. Its simple to build and should be nice and secure when finished.
I still have to attach the screen or plexi to it..havnt decided which yet.

Very nice idea! I've been thinking about something similar to allow a tank to be laid on it's front or side and turning the top into the front.

Are those 2x2's?

What are those pieces that you're using to lock your lid to the inside lip?

The wood is 1 3/4" x 3/4" poplar. I just bought a big piece of it and ripped it down to the correct size.
If your talking about the little gray tabs those are window screen clips.

Similar smaller things that do the same thing are called "turn buttons" (Look on rockler.com for them), same thing that is used to hold on the backs of photo frames. They're cheap.

Is this for a hot herp? I did this for one of my 55 gal and it worked great I did have a few differences though.
I use one peice of plywood then cut the doors out of that, then used sach locks on the doors, I drilled a small hole in the curved part of the sash lock to put a small pad lock to keep it locked. It worked good. The reason I went with one piece of wood is because the center divivder on my 55 would bow in or out and I didn't trust it.
Yours looks great and I can't wait to see it finished, the only thing I would do is to check or re-silicone the plastic tank top just in case. You never know if a snake can pop that top right off! I kept an adult male TX rat in mine for a month to test it lid and that was the only way he got out.. Rock on, Blue
