Help! Have 7 Baby Dumerils and on 2 are

critters4all Oct 28, 2006 08:52 PM

I am in need of some help. I have 7 baby Dumerils that were born about 7 weeks ago. I tried feeding these F/T fuzzy mice and only 2 ate. So I gave it a few days to let them shed as they were dark and after shedding I still have not had any luck. I have the temps at about 82. I have even gone as far as splitting the heads of the mice to get the smell a little stronger (as gross as that sounds). Should I go and get live fuzzys to possibly get them started? Is there any other suggestions without getting them started on live.

Thanks in advance Hank

Keep trying, but don't worry. I've never heard of dums being great eaters after hatching! What you are experiencing is completely normal in my opinion!

With out a doubt you should attempt them with live! You can always switch them over later...but the first meal is the most important!

I know you posted this ~2 weeks ago, but I'll put this in here for what it's worth.

I've heard that newborn Dums like prey that is scented with a lizard - the thought behind this being that there are lots of little lizards that are native to Madagascar, and these would be a pretty likely first meal for baby Dums. I can't say that I am an authority on this, but the theory sounds pretty good to me.

I've also read in this forum of somebody having a lot of luck with quail chicks if you should happen to be able to locate any (not an option for me anyway).

Otherwise, live fuzzy mice don't pose any hazard to the well being of your neonates - with rodents, if their eyes aren't open yet, they pretty much won't bite. If you can get live fuzzies, give them a try.

Good Luck!
