It's a tough call. These shell "buggies" can look like so many different things. Just to be safe, I'd begin daily scrubbing with a stiff bristled brush and a Chlorhexidine solution. Chlorhexidine is available at most pet stores. It is very safe, but watch out for other ingredients that may be added in.

Honestly, try to buy something that doesn't have any other ingredients. Pure Chlorhexidine would be best.
