Considering Showcase cages - feedback?

HaikuDan Oct 30, 2006 08:51 AM

I've searched here and on some other sites and haven't seen an reviews or comments from people using Showcase cages. They look pretty good to me. I'm going to be buying some cages relatively soon (mostly for colubrids) and was curious if anyone uses them and what their experience has been.

Thanks,
Dan

I've seen them at shows, felt them, lifted them and have seen a GTP in one.

They are HDPE much like Visions, but they have no ridges on the floor (that is a good thing) and no door lip for snakes to hide on top of (also a good thing.) The colors are nice too. Another good thing. And they have a heat shroud and a heat pad recess and a cord exit path. More good things.

I don't see why they wouldn't work just nicely.

Depends on the colubrids of course. Although the cages will work for any colubrid, I wouldn't pay the money for any plastic cage if you are housing something small like Mexican milks or hognose, etc where a sweaterbox or inexpensive glass tank is plenty roomy and far less expensive. I would even question expensive plastic cages for kings/milks that spend 99.9% of their time in or under the surface of the substrate, even though the cages will work fine in those cases too. A cornsnake on the other hand would look great because you could have some branches, and the snake would use them to bask sometimes.

Does anyone know who they are? They seem to have addressed some of the major vexing problems that I find so irritating with Vision cages. Their information says they are in southern California, but I didn't see a single name or address on their website, which always makes me uneasy with an entity which is presenting itself as a "real" business.

Does anyone here actually own any Showcase cages?

Here's their website: www.showcasecages.com

They've been around awhile; I've seen at least one company regularly advertising them here in the KS classifieds for quite some time.

But, as you say, I don't recall ever having seen anyone posting that they actually are using them. I may order 1 or 2 of the smaller ones to evaluate them.

I had looked at these for quite a while, once they dropped the price and included free shipping I decided to try one.
I wanted something a little prettier that the visions or other black cages out there.
The "moulding" is a pretty look and I love the forest color.
If you're planning on stacking them I did notice that the front top corner by the lighting channel is a slightly warped. Not sure if this is in all of them. The Hub felt with a little heat and wedging a block of wood behind it he could easily push it out. It also had a stong smell like a cross between chemicals and dead rat. after a thorough cleaning and some airing out it has since gone away ( before I put my borneo in it)
I like the porportion of the Largest cage, but the other 2 sizes (aesthically) I think are too tall and boxy for what I like or need (for ball pythons).
Other wise they are well thought out for what herpers need in terms of heat, lighting etc..
I am planning to get a couple more next year.

Hope this is helpful!
