I am at a lost?

rottenweiler9 Oct 30, 2006 08:22 PM

My 12ft or 13ft burm has deceided not to eat the last couple weeks. I want to say its been 3 weeks. I feed her about 6-8 pounds of rabbit every other week. She still has a lot of girth on her. She just pooped two big calcium things last week, so I thought that is why she did not eat the first time. But now, she does not want to eat. I tried this and have not done this in years but grabbed the tongs and tried to wiggle it in front of her. Nope, she just puts her head on the food and sits there.

Is this common with age? She is 3 years old, pretty big girl. I still think there is a lump of poop down awaiting to be dropped but that has never stopped her before. Do burms go off feed to around the winter time?

Any responses would be great

Jeff

When I take her out she just goes underneath a table I have that is covered and curls up. She used to move around the room.

I saw somebody else say breeding season somewhere. How long does that last. We did have a change in temps here but her cage has remained the same, but I still think they know.

Moses started doing the same thing at 3 years. Wouldn't eat rabbits, rats, chickens, guinea pigs, live or thawed from October to May. Been like that the last 2 years and has started again this year. The first year I must have wasted $200 worth of prey items. Now I only try every month to 6 weeks during the winter.

I too have gone through this...at around 3 yrs old. I also feed about every six weeks.
And even though they hunt, they often refuse food.
I really had a hard time with one that you threw the food in and ran. Now I leave food there, and nothing.
Seems pretty common.

I have a 16' female that slows down on her feeding regime during winter. By slowing down I mean 1 large rabbit every two or three weeks instead of 2 large rabbits a week. I wouldn't worry just yet. Keep an eye on her weight and make sure she doesn't get too cold and develop a respiratory infection. I have let my burms go for months without food during winter in order to breed them. You said she was three years old ,but how big is she? Sometimes burms will go off feed during breeding season especially males. Hope this helps
