Which substrate for humid hide?

vtec Oct 30, 2006 09:27 PM

I have vermiculite or Flukers all natural Moss to use. Right now I am using Flukers and it holds moisture really well but it seems to be giving off an odor. Is vermiculite ok to use or should I stay away from it?

I used the Fluker's moss in the past with similar results....a bad odor in 2-3 days. I switched to vermeculite and will NEVER go back. The vermeculite is cheaper, seems to hold moisture alot longer, and Ocho likes it better (She told me so).

I use coconut husk fiber for adults, and paper towels for babies. The coconut fiber comes in compressed bricks that you rehydrate for use. If you need smaller amounts you can just buy the small pucks that are made for hermit crabs. But it would be way cheaper to just buy a block of it and just dry and store what you don't need for later.

Paper towels would also work for adults, but I only use them for babies up to about 10g
