WALMART ASPEN 100% ASPEN???

KATISCRITTERS Oct 31, 2006 05:22 PM

I recently bought a bag of aspen shavings at walmart as I noticed it is really cheap there. It is sold really for small mammals, but what's the difference right? Anyway one of my corn snakes is coming down with an r i I think. Do you think there is somethiing besides aspen in it? Has anyone else used it?
Thanks in advance.
Kati

I bought my aspen at Wal*Mart for a long time, then they seemed to stop selling it. Is it a Wal*Mart brand? I think the brand I bought there was something "gold"... Duffy

No, it is not Walmart brand. I think it's Hartz or something. I just can't think of any other reason for her to be sick (except that that's my luck!) Since I have removed the chips she seems a lot better and it hasn't even been very long. Hmmmm... I guess we'll see she has a vet appt. next week.

Personally I would keep it on newspaper or papertowls. if you think that it is getting a "RI" infection just be sure to keep it dry and keep it a little warmer.

I love wal mart aspen! Its usually a little more finely shaven then the pet store stuff. And cheaper.

I've had a few snakes react with wheezing and runny noses on aspen, then completely clear up when moved to newspaper.

I think a certain dust content is the cause, and some individual snakes are more susceptable.

Some brands or lots of aspen make me sneeze, while others don't. Walmart (or Hartz) isn't known for its quality lol.

I would bet your snake is fine. Just don't use aspen for that one. You can try sani chips or cypress, or just use newspaper and be done with the issue. Good luck.
