Easterns and hibernating

rebekah315 Nov 01, 2006 12:54 PM

I have two Gulf Coasts and an Eastern. My Gulf Coasts hardly hibernate. My Eastern (last year was the first year I had her) hibernated by now (I think) this year she is not even showing signs that she is intersted in hibernating. Should I be doing something to encourage her?

It depends on where you live. Is the Eastern outside? Box turtles hibernate because outdoor temperatures drop, food sources dry up, daylight gets shorter and maybe even the low sun angle plays a part.

If the turtle is not losing weight, I would not do anything about it yet, especially if you live in one of the southern states. But if you think the turtle is sick, take the turtle to a vet with herp experience.

She is inside all the food she wants and a heat lamp that she shares with a gulf coast box in another tank.
