Snakes won't breed

Steven_ucf Nov 01, 2006 12:58 PM

This is my first time trying to breed snakes. I thought I have been doing everything right. From 1st week in October I had them at 92 degrees during the day and 85 degrees at night. Now I put them together hop'n for some love mak'n and they act as if they hate each other. I woke up in the morning hoping to see some sweet love, but all I saw was one snake on one side of the cage and the other snake on the other side. This is their third day together and nothing. I dropped the temps down more at night hoping to get them in the mood. Does anybody know where I am going wrong? Thanks for your help.

Maybe it was a misprint - but at 90 plus degrees you are way too hot ...

Lower your night temps to 82* hot and 72* cool.

Also adjust their lighting to 14 hours of dark and 10 of light

Do this for a month and then introduce them.

Thanks for your help.

I should have explained myself a little better.

Beginning in October I began dropping the temps at night.

During the day, the heat tape temp is 92 degrees and the cool side is 82 degrees. At night, I have been dropping heat tape temps down to 85 degrees and the cool side is 75 degrees.

And you are sure you have one boy and one girl both of proper breeding age & weight, etc.?

Sorry had to ask ...

Always possible that one or the other just isn't ready.

The only one in question is my male. He is a 05' about 700 grams. He was bought as a proven breeder, from a reputable breeder who only had good stuff about him on BOI. He said that he was bred to (2) females last season. He is real tame and a great eater, just not seeming to be a great breeder. My females are from 1500 to 2200 grams. All are proven breeders. The females were probed by my vet and they were females. Never had my male probed, but he is supposed to be a proven male.

If he is that small this year and a quest.breeder for this year how could he have bread last year in 05 when he is a 05 ,is it a type o or am I missunderstanding something David

That is what I asked the breeder who I bought him from. And he stated that Male ball pythons are regularly bred in their first year (6 months of age). 500 grams is usually all it takes for a male ball to start to reproduce. Alot of people have sucess even smaller than that (Steve Gooch, for example, produced clutches with his spider ball at approx 350 - 400 grams. Steve is Bob Clarks photographer, in case you don't know who I am referring to).

I may be wrong but I don't think thay are sexuly matchure at 6 months old. I have never had one. David

I have heard of 300 gram males producing viable clutches! Some are mature and some aren't!

Not trying to get you worked up just wanting to help, I read this board every day and you would come off a lot better if you did a spell check I am bad but you take the cake. Matchure – Mature
Normel – Normal

Hey Steven,
I saw that with a couple pairings myself this year. I seperated the pairs for a few days and bam!!! They're breeding great. Maybe it's a "Don't know what ya got till it's gone" feeling after they're seperated that gets them going?

Hopefully they breed before the end of Feb.......if not they probably aren't going to breed this year. Drop the temps down lower at night and hopefully they get in the mood come December.

For what it's worth, all I ever do is turn off everything but the UTH. Although I don't normally start till the end of November, they are generally hookin' up by the middle of the month. Good luck.
