Heat pad with Paper Towel Sub

DarkBlades Nov 01, 2006 07:54 PM

I plan to switch my purple sand substrate to paper towel instead because I hear its saffer and easier to clean. I use heat pad on the right side, with about 3/4 inch of sand in between the bottom and the surface. I dont want to burn my leos so How much padding of Paper towel do I put?

I might be answering my own question but I just dont want to cause a fire or something, lol.

Thanks

Every setup is different, and that question is nearly impossible to answer without me physically being there to examine the setup.

The best thing to do (WHICH IS WHAT HERPTOCULTURISTS DO) is to setup a tank WITHOUT the animals first and monitor the heat gradient and adjust accordingly. Please refer to other online sources about leopard geckos if you need to know what heat gradient is proper.

You can buy a light dimmer from WalMart for $5. Use that to monitor temps.

I use a dimmer - called a FLOOR DIMMER - from wal mart. Works wonderfully! This time of year I keep the temps up pretty high though since I'm currently in Moscow (Idaho - not Russia) where the temp is about 15 degrees. Yuck.

Next week I will be moving to California so I think the "cool side" will be much more comfortable for my babies than the room temperature right now.

I have one layer of paper towels down, and then a tuperware container I electric taped black so it would be darker. He stays in there, right over the heat pad, most of his time. Inside the hide I have one square of folded up paper towel, and about 3 squares of toilet paper, which I mist every other day. He also has a vermiculite shelter adjacent to that, but I havn't seen him go in there for awhile. When he does, he just kicks the substrate out onto the paper towels. I honestly havn't had a problem with just one layer of paper towel. He doesn't seem to mind at all, because if he did, he'd chose a new hide.

I use a thermostat (basically a more expensive dimmer, heh) with my heat mats/tape, and I usually do a double layer of paper towel, just because it's a little tougher for the geckos to mess up the towels when they're doubled up. Just my opinion though...
