Things took a turn for the worse Tuesday for a local man getting evicted from his home.

While law enforcement officials were participating in the eviction of Clayton G. Stacks, 38, they discovered a stash of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in the home. They even found a surveillance system in a tree in the front yard, officials say was used to watch for police.

Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said investigators had been trying to locate Stacks for months in an effort to serve him with three misdemeanor warrants from Eastland, Hamilton and Erath Counties. He said when investigators learned about the eviction, they headed to the residence hoping to find Stacks.

“Shortly after Donnie Hensley and Tom Green arrived at the scene, Stacks showed up,” Bryant said. “When he realized what was happening, he tried to flee, but was apprehended before he got to the main road.”

Stacks was arrested and transported to the Erath County Jail. But as he was being booked, he had a surprise of his own.

“Stacks told the jailer that he should probably contact the investigators still searching the home because there were three live rattlesnakes they needed to watch out for,” Bryant said. “That was awfully nice of him to warn the officers.”
