I've purchased some fake ivy and wrapped polyester/polypropylene cord around it to keep the rough edges from harming my Cal king. Polyester has a weird odor when it's new, and I was wondering if the polyester would be harmful to my Cal king.

Your kingsnake is adapted for life amidst sharp rocks, cacti, and all sort of other crap. That why they have tough scales. You don't need to cover the ivy.
I have no idea about the smell issue, ask the guys in the cage forum if you still want to.
Thanks for the advice.
