my babies wont eat...

lalalala Aug 06, 2003 11:19 PM

i can't figure out why my new hatchlings wont eat. they hatched a week ago, and already shed. i've offered small crickets and mealworms. they have toilet paper rolls as hides, soda bottle caps as water bowls and paper towels as substrate. also, they have both pooped, and they were both sorta watery, i guess. how could they possibly be sick already?

It’s not uncommon for a baby leo to poop even before it eats it's first meal. I would keep the mealworms and crix around. Newborns will most likely not feed if you are in the room or the lights are on, they like to do their hunting at night. Take any left over crickets away in the morning to be re-gutloaded.
Paper towels are great as a substrate; you can use newspaper also since it is cheaper. I use a lot of newspaper with my rack system cages.
Watery poo can be expected, especially when it is freah. I’m pretty sure leopards poo and pee at the same time, so that is the water waste you are seeing.
Make sure to mist their humid hide and encloseure daily. Your babies need higher humidity than adults do. So, keep the meal worms around, and give them some time.

keep trying small crix their preditory instincts will kick in soon. How big a tank or container are they in? If they are in a larger tank they may just not be able to catch them. I start feeding my babies in small disposible glad ware. Put in wioth a couple crix for a hour or so unless they eat right away. The poops are normal their first poops are from the yolk sac that they dissovled and are usually kind of nasty.
