Sexing Iguanas?

RobertIIII Nov 03, 2006 02:23 AM

Was just wondering if there is any way to sex a young iguana? By young I mean one that is less then 18 inches? If you can sex them at this age, what should I look for? I'm asking this question because I would like to obtain a male iguana. Thanks again.

Im 100% positive that you could get an adult or even a yearling male Ig for free. Sure the babies are cute but in a few months it will be 3' anyways so why not adopt one whos needing a home instead of buying one.

Well its realy hard to and theres no sure way to tell till around 3 years truthfully some peep w uess but thats all you can do. so way to tell but dont mean the are cuz so males are just less male looking than others and some females are realy male looking but mines 2 year old and looks like a male ill try to post a pic so u can tell what im saying . under there legs on both sides are pores w a kinda wax substance in them. usaly males are larger then females USALY
Also makes have lager dewlaps w a larger jowel scale and last thing its on there necl lik mine the have a fatty build on it usaly male but u know females somtime have this too u just cant tell w litt 1s and it would be best pribly to adopt a older male if thats what you realy want! Good Luck1

You can visualy sex an iguana with accuracy at 6 months and usually even sooner. At a year old they shoud be 3' and males sometimes will be mature enough to breed. So, whats with 3 years?

As posted below they CAN be probed but there is great risk involved and you realisticly arent going to find someone who is A) qualified and B) willing. You can still get a false result from probeing so whats the point? Its just to easy to harm the lizard.

Large dewlap, jowls and preanal pores indicate a male.

If too young, an expert, and ONLY AN EXPERT, can use probes to see whether it is male or female, or a vet.

I agree with the others, find a young adult (1.5 to 2 years old) to adopt. Iguanas can live plenty long if properly cared for.
