Breeding male question

senorsnake Nov 03, 2006 11:02 AM

We have two breeding pairs in the same stack, one of the females has recently become receptive and is ovbiously putting out the scent to let the boys know it. The only problem is our male in with the other female has stopped courting her and spends all day trying to get out of his cage (to get to the other female, i assume)Is there anything you can do in this situation? Or do we have to wait til the other female becomes receptive too, or the other one ovulates and is finished?

If you can, move the distraced male and the female you want to breed him with into another room. That's tough! Good luck.

I thought about that, unfortunately we only have 1 thermostat and 1 room heater so it wouldn't work.

I actually switched the caging, hoping the aspen with the scent of the other girl would put him in the mood. It worked for about two minutes, but our boy is no fool.

well you know, sometimes it's just the way it is. I don't have a second place for snakes yet either besides my snakeroom/bedroom. I have wondered about what you're asking before too. Maybe you can somehow get the strong scent of the female he wants, onto the female you want him to breed?

Good luck!

the male wants to get at the other female because babies are more likely to be produced with her, and by ignoring his wishes you get NO babies? You can always go back to the other female.
Just a thought.. a tough call either way.

I'm pretty sure (or as sure as one can be with boas) that the one he's interested will be gravid. We had put him in with her for a little while to try to get the males to compete, and they've both copulated with her, and the other male is continuing to do so. I guess theres no problem putting him back in there and waiting til shes done.

The one who I want him to mate with is a het, and the one he wants to is a 50% het. I know someone else mentioned they had a motley who would only breed with his normals.. think its possible maybe they don't want to breed with an animal that has a genetic defect? Although if that was the reason there goes my possible het! lol.

I missunderstood. I thought you only had the one male.
Yeah, definately leave him where he is. Hopefully the female he's with will get receptive soon.

If you can't seperate (only have one stat) not a whole lot you can do.

Bottom line IMO, if the receptive female is "distracting" the other male, so be it. If his girlfriend is not putting out pheromones, she is not ready and while an attentive male can help get a female receptive, until she's ready and willing to go, aint nothing gonna happen anyways.

BTW, you do realise you have everything riding on a single point of failure? If that one stat does fail, not likely but can and does happen, then you have no backup!! Another stat is only a hundred bucks..?? Several of my cages have two stats per cage, belly and basking stats. I have backups for all my stats and heating sources. Either a spare unit or another cage secion.
