Quick pics.

Hi Everyone

No, I didn't buy a lotto ticket, hehe. But I took a couple of pics of my pituophis after taking some lineaticollis pics for Glenn's post. Here are some up-n-comers for the 07/08 season. I'm really excited for my pituophis next year since I will be breeding a couple of them for the first time. Hope you guys enjoy the pics. Take care.

Hoping to produce some abberant babies from abberant parents. Here's my female from Lemke/Kardon stock. Her anterior portion of her by has a peachy tan and black coloration and then turns into rich reds and oranges posteriorly.

Very beautiful! But unfortunately it's not a true Pituophis deppei. Prefrontals are divided...

jonellopez Nov 08, 2006 03:42 AM

Hi

I did discuss this feature with the originating breeder and we also talked to other individuals regarding the matter. The parents and the lineage of this particular animal was traceble back to the original animals that was collected by Alan Kardon. Both of the parents, and for that matter grandparents, have the 2 prefrontals as well as its other siblings and some breeders have also reported some incidence variations of the prefontals from 2, 3, and as in this case 4. From what I understand and what I and the breeder have discussed with other parties is that this variation is possible due to the "integration and introgression that occurs between P. deppei and P. m. affinis in Northern Mexico (Conant 1965, Morafka 1977 - agreed)". This issue would further reinforce that theory by these two researchers that there may have been, or still, some interaction between the two species in that area. There's a lot to be studies since there have been no studies on movements of these animals movements in elevation in these areas.

Hello

I really didn't know about this P. deppei jani / P. catenifer affinis hybrid zone, therefore I just assumed the 4 prefrontals in your P. d. jani must have been the result of a crossbreeding in captivity. Surely, a neutral or perhaps even beneficial trait such as a divided prefrontal could introgres a long way into the area of an otherwise distinct species. Such traits may enable the species to exploit habitats otherwise not accessible, ultimately (and potentially) altering the evolutionary outcome of the species. So these publications you mentioned make me very curious, and I'll definately check them out.

Best regards,

Here's my Kingsville, TX locale red bull female. I'm really happy on how whe turned out. I always check inside the box a couple of times a day just to check her out. I can never get over the colors. It even beats my orange thayeri in intensity.

Here's another shot that shows her entire body. I like how the colors and contrast gets more intense towards the tail.

That has got to be the redest Bull I've ever seen, freaky.

Kestrel Nov 03, 2006 03:48 PM

That snake is increadible! Too bad more of the Kingsvilles don't turn out that nice. I want some in a bad way.

Funny, I was just browsing your website.. Nice pics of Sycamore Canyon! I've run into more then one herper while hiking down that canyon. LOL. And alot of biologists look for certain butterflies or scorpians. Man I miss Arizona.

jonellopez Nov 03, 2006 05:46 PM

Hi Brienne

Thanks. I know what you mean. I was fortunate enough to see its sibling so I had something to compare it to. I picked her since she had the most red specks as a hatchling. Some do turn out nice also but one wouldn't assume that they would as hatchlings.

I was in Sycamore Canyon this summer with a friend of mine who was not only a herper but a bug guy also. Like you said, there were lots of cool bugs in the area in the daytime and specially at night. There were also lots of birds too but I didn't have my telephoto ext. back then to get decent pics of them. I love going there for a short vacation and will try to do it anually if time permits. There are still lots of animals that I haven't found and to be added to the life list.

Thanks again for the compliment. Take care.

This male really shows why Gary B. called them as speckled bulls. I like how this morph looks like the snake is moving(like when you take blurry pic of a moving snake) when it actually isn't. He even shows some faint striping on him. His speckled mate is on the lighter side and they are both possible 3x hets. Oh man! the excitement! hehe.

Wow, you have some amazing Bulls! In this pic he looks like he is plated in gold.

jonellopez Nov 03, 2006 12:29 PM

Here's a pic of my female. Although she is pretty much unicolored, I like how this morph combinations shows a subtle beauty. A terror when she was a hatchling but have since calmed down. Love this girl!

jonellopez Nov 04, 2006 02:21 PM

Hi Jason (Mr. Pituophis Morph, hehe)

Thanks bro. I got them from Shannon an picked them out when he came to Sacramento a couple of years ago. I'm really happy I had the chance to pick 'em out and specially after how they turned out. I appreciate the kind words esp. coming from an avid pituophis breeder like youself.

One of my pride and joy. Here's a Axanthic White-sided Speckled male. Planning to breed him to my females in the future to get some killer morph combos. We'll see if he's up for the challenge.

Stunning. You have some amazing morphs in the US. Here I am stuck in Canada. Nothing like that up here

jonellopez Nov 03, 2006 05:49 PM

Hi Durrus

That sucks. I'm sure you would love to keep some of these guys. Some of the bigger breeders can ship to Canada and to Europe though so you may want to ask around. Thanks again for the nice words. Take care.
