tortoise nail infection?

i noticed this mornign that one of junior's claws has become smaller and darker in color. i made sure that it wasn't just dirty...

any ideas? can he have maybe some kind of infected nail? it doesn't seem to hurt him; he doesn't flinch when i touch it any more than any of his other nails.
