I picked guy up off a highway in AZ near Tucson almost 2 years ago. Was down there for 3 weeks doing some field herping, and of the 2-3 years I spent on and off visiting, he's the only snake I brought home(and yes, I did spend the 112 bucks on the permit each time, so it was legal. LOL). He was just too cute to pass up. Had maybe one shed under his belt at the time.

Shortly after picking him up.

Hi Brienne

Nice find! I also found a sonoran while herping in Sta Cruz County, AZ. I was a nice clean animal and almost looked hypo. Not to mention it was the most docile wild Pituophis I have ever found. I kept it overnight for morning pics the let it go at the same area it was found going out of the park. Here's a pic.

That is a beautiful snake! 3 weeks and only 1 snake? What time of year were you herping southern AZ? Sonorans are the only Gopher ssp. native to California's mainland (I live in SoCal = SD Gopher territory)that I have never found in the wild or kept. I have a WC Great Basin and a WC Pacific. How long is he now after 2 years? Hope to get me a Sonoran next year. I love how they're so variable in pattern depending on the locale. I've seen the ones w/ brown blotches and a tan base like yours, and the yellower ones like the one J. Lopez's pic.

This is my 8 Y.O. Son with a 4' wild Sonoran Gopher.
He (the snake) is calm like my corns. I have normal and albinos, all real easy to work with.

Very cool. After years of searching, I achieved "Pituophis Trifecta" in 2006, catching a Sonoran in Arizona, a Great Basin Gopher in Vegas and two Pacific Gophers in California. Previously I've never found a Pituophis in the field. Below is a pic of the GBG.
