Ideas for a new snake

tugi Nov 04, 2006 12:21 AM

I'm looking to get a new snake. I was looking for one that will be my boyfriends snake for him to enjoy. Any ideas on snakes that are very brightly colored and vibrant? Colorful and not too big(i.e albino burms are cool but one is enough thank you). No hots; we are in california. Blood pythons seem pretty neat, and he likes brazilian rainbow boas as well. Anyone got any suggestions of snakes to check out?

Ever considered Cape Gopher snakes or any of the Milksnake ssp. Don't know if you're strictly into pythons, but for personality, manageable size and ease of care colubrid snakes such as these can't be beat.

be very careful with the blood pythons. I've got 2, A male which I purchased online and he was tame from the first day i got him, and I picked up a female this past weekend at the F.I.R.E expo, and for some reason forgot to ask if she was handleable, but when I got her home she is very aggressive. She strikes at me every chance she gets and has hit me several times. She is very young and fortuantely just striking with her mouth closed, but these snakes have a very bad rep of being pretty nasty. I'm hopeing with time she will calm down. She is captive bred which are usually calmer than wild caught, but hopefully I can tame her down. Anyways, I'd recommend a Dumeril. They are fairly docile snakes and only get around 6-8 feet.

I'll have to disagree with the blood python thing. I have two who have been tame since the day I bought them. I think there are plenty of people who would share a similar experience. I'm sure that like every snake, there are some who are less than friendly, but assuming that you get a captive bred one, your odds are pretty good at getting one who is already calm or will calm down with a small amount of handling. I personally think they are wonderful snakes that are great to keep.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Dumeril's have awesome personalities but they certainly don't fit the bright and vibrant color requirement. Maybe when they're younger but not as they mature.

I agree that colubrids like king, milk, corn, and others are great pets. They come in many colors and paterns and they realy are easy to keep.

If you are stuck on pythons and boas then I would recomend ball pythons. They are relitivly docil (mine has never tried to bite me), they are a "small" python (usually not longer than 6'), and they come in many beautiful morphs. There are more color and pattern varieties in ball pythons than I can name.

Happy hunting
