Mealworm questions :P....

FireTalon Nov 04, 2006 06:18 AM

Where do you guys keep your mealworms and what do you keep them in? Should gutloaded mealies stay seperate from the others and how many mealies would you give to a juvenile/baby? Also (last question lol) do you dust mealies with vitamin suppliment AND calcium or just keep a calium dish in the vivaruim? thankyou in advance

Depends on if you have mealworms or king/superworms. Mealworms can be kept in the fridge, but you have to take them out every few days to warm up and eat. Supers shouldn't be refridgerated, it'll kill them. I don't even bother with mealworms, but my adults LOVE supers.

I keep my supers in a disposable rubbermaid sandwich container, with gutload and some carrots for moisture. I don't have a problem with die-off, but I only buy enough to last me 2-3 weeks at a time.

Thankyou, i just want to know do you dust mealies/superworms with vitamin suppliment AND calcium or just keep a calium dish in the vivaruim?

I dust EVERYTHING that is fed to my geckos. 5 days a week with pure calcium, one day with calcium D3 and one day with multivitamins. I also leave a small dish (milk jug lid for babies, shallow 'mealie dish' for adults) of PURE calcium in the dish for them.

I also supplement the gutload I feed to my insects with a LOT of calcium and vitamins.

Thankyou begunwithaletter I really appreaciate your advise, hopefully my future geckos will have just as greater life as you are giving yours

No problem! Leos are pretty easy to care for, once you get everything set up and fall into a routine. It takes me about 20 minutes to clean water dishes, change paper towels, check humid hides, refill calcium, dust and feed everyone, and that's per day... not bad, for 8 little geckos!

WOW! And i'll only be getting one! (i think lol) I'm going to have a little look tomorrow in a reptile shop to see what I can find, but with ur help it shouldn't be too hard!

For my mealworms, I have them in one of those tuperware shoe boxes filled with oats, which i've added carrots and potatoes to. I'm trying to get a good culture going so I can breed my own, but that's normally what goes on. There are a few websites where you can get 1000 mealworms for 15$ shipped, or near that amount. I havn't tried superworms yet, but my guy is still kinda small.
