Brown persica

metalpest Nov 04, 2006 12:39 PM

OK, not as nice as the O.p. pulchra below, but still a cool snake. She was produced last year by Troy Hibbitts. We think she is red phase, despite the brown coloration. She also has nice red eyes. I think she looks a lot like longissima with the checkered/speckly appearance. I now have 1.3 persica, which I hope to breed in 08.

And my other red persian (poor pic):

How do they behave when handled? My longissima tolerate handling but are never relaxed. Are these that way?

Regards
John

I can hold them, but they are pretty flighty, and they will bite. I've been told that is normal for babies, and they grow out of it as they age. One really doesn't like to be held, and another is pretty calm when held.

I would expect a lot of similarities to longissima, since they were considered a subspecies until about 10 years ago, but I have never kept longissima myself.

Yes that sounds about right for the longissima when I first got them. Now they're relatively mellow.

Yes they are supposed to be closely related but you know how even subspecies can have different reputations for behavior (for example, some people find that a certain locale of obsoleta is more prone to biting). The behaviour sounds similar.

Interesting, I haven't heard about different dispositions in subspecies. I can hardly wait for them to mellow out a little. I held the new brown one a little today and she was pretty calm, not trying to bite or anything.
