Sticks from the yard

stormwulf133 Nov 04, 2006 05:05 PM

Ok, here is the deal. I don't want to spend 40 dollars a pop for branches for my corns and boa. Yes they are in different habitats before anyone freaks. I want plenty of climbing sticks. My parents just cut down a honeysuckle plant... Is it safe to use if I bake it at 250 for about 2 hours? or does it have saps? What wood can I use and what cant I use?

Stay away from cedar or any kind of aromatic wood (toxic oils). If it doesn't smell strongly, it probably will be ok. But I wouldn't use it if it has a lot of sticky sap oozing out.

People bake sticks in the oven, other people soak wood in a 5% bleach solution (make sure to rinse VERY well with plain water after soaking). Some people will put wood in the freezer to try and kill any critters that may be in/on it. I personally use the soak in bleach solution method.

Good luck!
