trevorbennett Aug 07, 2003 12:52 AM

i am going to be purchasing a BD in about a week and i have never owned one before. and i'm not interested in breeding them because i don't have enough space for any more than one. i am looking for an adult and i think that if i could give a retired breeder a good home that would be awesome!!!! even if i still had to pay a reasonable amount. do you guys and gals know of how i could find out about any retired breeders????? thanx!

Ok, I know I admitted I was blonde in an earlier post, but I do have good ideas sometimes lol

I am going to build myself another 5x2x2 tank and I think this is going to be strictly for retired females. My children are always buggin me to hold my dragons, etc and I won't let them when they are gravid, etc. This way, I can have my retired females (when I have some) and maybe other's that people have "given away" in a nice sized tank where they can live out a comfortable life and also my kids won't have me yelling at them about picking up a gravid female because they can help me take care of the "older" ones!

I think I am going to take the route of getting an older dragon too. There is a show in my area in september, but I doubt there will be any old ones there. I volunteer at a shelter, but that is rare that you will find a reptile there. So now I'm kinda wondering where I am going to get an older dragon. Any ideas?

You never know, someone might get in touch with you after reading all these posts on the subject. Other than that, I would keep an eye on the shelter, possibly call other area shelters and also keep an eye on the online classifieds daily.

I think most people here treat their dragons as pets first and foremost, so you may have trouble finding someone willing to part with an older one. I have a great female that is in her last year of breeding, but I wouldn't part with her for any amount of money.

I know responsible people like the ones on this forum would not part with an older dragon. The breeders here do not treat their dragons just as a breeding stock but also as a pet. Unfortunetly there are a lot of people who do just keep animals to breed them and as soon as there potential is gone they get rid of them. If every person was like the owners here I would have no where to volunteer, but that's not the case. I was thinking of getting in touch with some of the vendors that are going to be at a near by show and see if they have any older dragons that they are looking to get rid of. Well I'm not sure but I know there are older dragons that need good homes, it will just take while to find one.

Good luck in finding an older dragon to make happy. Seems like a really nice thing to do for a beardie past her prime. You can make her golden years especially enjoyable. I know when I decided I was going to get into beardies heavily I had to part with some of my other species. I just wanted to have one species at a time, and through the years I had acquired quite a few species from the rescue. The Iguana's I kept cause they were really large, and most likely would have been difficult to find a loving home for them with enough room for the huge cage I had for them. So they stayed. I did part with my uromastyx though and I gave them to Tee at T&C beardies for the price of shipping. They still have them, and are getting plenty of attention there. Most likely if you find someone who really cares for their animals you could get them pretty cheap. I know I didn't want money for them just wanted them to have a nice home. Good luck, and I think that's a really nice thing to do for an older dragon. Especially if they were just a number to someone. Sorry I get upset when I see adults with numbers on the butt like they are an inmate at a prison. All mine are pets first, and breeders because I love these dragons so much. I don't think I could ever part with any of them. I found it extremely hard to give up the uro's. You can ask Tee I packaged them like they were worth a million bucks
