woke up this morning to catch one of my females giving birth. She was almost done, the last baby was half in / half out. Was a very nice litter, 26 healthy babies, No slugs, No stills. All were full term with no yolks. Mom is fine but understandably very thin, she went from a pre birth weight on 08/10 of 2937 grams to a post birth weight of 1962 grams, That's a loss of a third of her weight. Baby weights ranged from 26 to 32 grams, typical for all three litters this year.

I believe I am done for the year, all three litters came from the same group (same male) The other group appears to have not taken at all, probably the male was not willing and never mated with any of the females.

I knew this could be a problem only having two males and if one didn't go then I would lose half of my litters. Fortunately I now have 2 more males at 2 1/2 years old for this coming breeding season. I also have 5 more males from 2005 that will be in the breeding groups for 2007/2008 season. I no longer will be breeding more than 2 females per male in any given breeding season so fewer "eggs" in any given "basket".

She was the last female I thought "looked" gravid yet she never showed any signs of being ready to give birth. She has been hiding in her moss tub for months and had not recently come out.
