Crested Substrate and temps....

kindergecko Nov 05, 2006 07:56 AM

For anyone who has cresties... what kind of substrate do you use and how do you control their temps in the winter?

I have 2 cresties. I use the coco fiber for a substrate, though I would like to switch to a bioactive soil substrate in the future.
If you don't care about a naturalistic presentation, you can use paper towel for a substrate.
For temps, I use a 75Watt bulb to keep the temps in the low 70's.

I keep my cresteds with silk/plastic plants as a base over most of the aquarium floor. I really don't like anything the geckos can injest as a result of catching crickets. I wash off the plants every could of months or so and it works great.
My cresteds are kept in the 70's for most of the spring/summer/fall breeding period and drop into the mid to high 60s for the winter- cooling off season. Do you have a concern with the temps you are running?

It's just that we keep our house around 69 at night since it's winter here in PA and during the day 72 degrees. I was just wondering because at night, his temp falls to around 68-65 degrees. I've been working with this 25w red light for some added heat and it seems to keep it at the right temp around 72-74 at night. My two leos have their heat mat to keep their tanks just right. I'm going to stick with paper towels because I don't want to risk Yoshi injesting something. Thanks for the input.

Cresteds don't have the same temp requirements as leopards. Your day and night time temps are perfect during the 'off' season
