Golden corns . . . . . .Update

BlueKing Nov 05, 2006 11:09 AM

Sorry for the wait, for some . . .
Yes, this was posted a while ago and was deleted by the moderators, because a mention was made to someone's web site. . . .
Here's what happened this year: I bred the biggest male baby from last year's clutch to its' mother. He was not very big, (just under two feet), so he was only able to fertilize 4 out of 16 eggs that the mother laid. Out of those four eggs, 2 came out looking normal, with orange and red, and 2 came out with NO RED or ORANGE! So I am pretty excited to know that I have what appears to be 2 baby golden corns so far. They are gray with light brownish blotches and just a tiny bit of yellow on them. I still havn't seen them in person myself yet, since I've been overseas since they hatched, (but I've seen some nice pics of them that a friend of mine took when he visited my house this past August).
Unfortunately out of last years' babies (12), only 4 are females, so I will probably have some golden corns next year, but not too many. But it is great to know that this IS a genetic trait that seems to have proved out finally!
I will post some NEW pics of those two little ones AND at least one of their siblings (for comparison) as soon as my wife takes more pics of them. Hopefully I can have her do this for me in the next few days. She's very busy and also works long hours like me over here! My two sons DO take great care of my snakes, for me, but they have NO camera skills!
And it doesn't help that my wife always tells me she hates taking snake pics, because they won't sit still for her . . . Thanks for understanding AND your patience,

Zee

I was just thinking about your snake yesterday.
Its been so long since you found her that it would be nice to hear the original story again.
Congratulations on the babies - what an exciting enterprise. An entire new morph all to yourself.
She ceratinly is a gorgeous snake and we all are wondering what happens when it is combined into some other morphs.
A hurricane motley gold?
A banded gold?
Patternless?

Thank you very much. I had always dreamed of finding something special in the wild one day. Kind of like a fisherman dreaming of catching the "Big one". In a way, I can thank my 13 year old son for getting me to go out and hunt snakes that evening. I did not have an interest in going at all that day. I will tell the whole story again, no problem. I have it on my other computer in the states. I'm currently ovrerseas and I'll see if my wife can find it and e-mail it to me.

Nice work! Not only do you have the morph to yourself. It's one of the coolest morphs out there.

But you know what they say - Don't keep all your eggs in one basket. Spread the love!

Thanks. Now if I can just say some sweet kind words to my wife so she'll take some pics for me of those lil' golden ones, than even I would be happy. I havn't seen pics of them since they were hatchlings either. Thanks again,

Congrats, Zee. Glad to hear you're now on third base with the project. A home run will be when you prove this gene is not allelic to caramel. It's important that you breed that F1 male to a caramel. Even though the appearance of your snakes don't say "caramel", you must prove that out. And of course, there's the double homo byproducts from such breeding trials to consider. Even if they're different genes (surely are/hope so), imagine how cool your gene and caramel would be in the same snake. Could really be off the charts.

Good luck and keep us posted,

Thanks Don.
I appreciate the kind words and words of wisdom as well. I will be doing exactly what you said with at least one of the F-1 males. I have plenty of males, lol! I will keep you posted. I even scheduled to take leave in early April so I can be home to breed those snakes in the spring. Now if I can just sweet-talk my wife into some pics of tose babies! I havn't seen pics of them myself since they were little.

and btw how much do you plan on selling them for? are you going to sell out like the bp morphs or charge a reasonable price? either way you will earn good money. i bet striped golds would be sweet.

Good question. One that I honestly havn't put any thought into yet. But I can assure you, it will be reasonable (based on available offspring of course). If I have a lot of (golden) babies, then the price will obviously be lower. If not, then I really don't know at this time . . .
Now if I can just get my wife to take those pics for me, then that would be sweeeeeet!!!!

i think a good reasonable price thats fair to you and the consumer is $500. youll earn goood but your not charging an insane amount.
