Size comparison?

bigbarret85 Nov 05, 2006 11:23 AM

On average, wich snake is larger; Malaysian, sumatran of borneo python? I have a female Sumatran and am getting a Red blood here in the next week or so. Just curious as to what to expect in size. I know they range between 4 1/2- 7 feet on average but are there any exception between the three? Thanks in advance.

Ok first off Malaysians are Sumatrans, Malaysians are a certain local of the Sumatran Red Blood. There is also a Sumatran Short Tail also known as the Black Blood, and a Borneo Short Tail Python from the island of Borneo. So you have three species Red Blood (P. Brongersmai) Sumatran Short Tail (P. Curtus) and the Borneo Short Tail (P. Breitensteni). It is typically thought that the Reds get the biggest, Borneos are second, and Blacks stay the smallest. However in captivity it's all relative to the individual snake and how much you feed them. I've seen all species get in excess of 6'. So in essence it really doesn't matter which species you go with if your looking for size. IMHO a 6' blood is just as impressive as a 20' retic and a whole heck of a lot easier to manage and feed! Let us know if you ahve any other questions.

Sry for the ignorance. Still new to the localities and names. Thanks for the information though.

It's not the best pic to show the true size, but this female is in a 4' FB rack and she is between 6 and 7 feet (20 - 25 pounds?). BIG, but nice!

Nice borneo, but I would put it at about 5.5ft.

Hey, Rich! I'll straightline her when I have time... She sure looks at least 6 when I have her out and about and can get a good stretch from her.

Still a very nice animal...not matter how big!

I run them along the wall baseboard and mark the areas for measurement. That is why I love doing shows at museums, they have lots of wall space.

Thanks, Rich! Much appreciated.

Good idea! I usually bring them onto the tile in the house, try for a good stretch and measure where they stretch to based on the grout lines (get the tail at a line and see where the head winds up). Usually works. I'll let you know. I have a feeling I overestimated, but you never know...
