undescribed species of monitor

59herps Aug 07, 2003 01:27 AM

There have been quite a few new monitor species over the past 6 years or so. But are there any undescribed species coming in at the moment. There is only one monitor I can think of coming in over the past few years that still hasn't been classified and that was the green mangrove monitor that was also a dwarf at 2 1/2 feet. I think bayless had it but not sure. Does anyone on this forum keep an as yet unidentified varanid? Or are there any pics of mystery varanids? Is the black and yellow tree monitor still unclassified?
Thanks,
Devlin

Have the blue trees been *officially* described yet? I heard the only reason anyone could import them was becaues they weren't described and therefore weren't held to any CITES regulations.

Hello Devlin,
Yes Varanus Bohmei (see www.Varanus.nl/forum for pics), V. macraei last year, V. auffenbergi, then V. caerulirvirens, V. cerambonensis, V. melinus, V. (doreanus) finschii, V. doreanus, V. yemenensis and so on - obviosuly Indonesia is the hubb of Vara-diversity!

I have a as yet undescribed Varanus in my freezer, and know of two others also undescribed to-date...I am planning to name mine species after George A. Boulenger (1885-1939), whose work on varanids has gone unnoticed.

cheers,
mbayless

The guy they named Rynchophis boulengeri after? Just curious. One of my favorite ratsnakes.

Hi Devlin,

I do not have a scanner and do not know how to transfer pics to computer or anything of the sort...if you go to www.cybersalvator.com and check their picture gallery- there are two pics of her there...she is in the V. indcius complex, but clearly not V. indicus. She is identified from W.W.II sailors while fighting japanese as to her exact locality then (1943-1944). Second thought, Maybe I will name her after Admiral Nimitz? Varanus nimitzi??
cheers,
