crazy lizard

crazyjharris Nov 05, 2006 09:48 PM

i just bought a juvenile blizzard female. it's really aggresive. it actually jumped off the ground to try and bite my finger about an inch above it.she's a crazy eater also. it's my third lizard so i'm new to it. i've heard/read high incubation temp may be the cause. if so , should i provide her with lower living temps or just try and get her use to being handled?

Maybe it's just a case of mistaken identity.

I had a similar issue with my giant tremper albino. I don't know if blizzards suffer from poor eyesight or not like my tremper does. Anyway, my albino jumps at my fingers in search of food. Best I can figure is that he has a hard time judging the difference between tweezers and fingers and he's still a bit used to getting food from the stars instead of the ground. He tends to miss his food a lot due to the same eyesight issue.

If he gets a chance to lick my fingers first then he knows it's not as tasty as his normal meal and he'll ignore them thereafter for a bit (they have short memories).

Just be glad he isn't a tokay gecko. When those things get a good grip I hear they're not too willing to let go.

thanks, i don't think it's eye sight though. when i said she's a crazy eater i mean she goves for over kill. i think she's just over aggresive.

Just a thought, you aren't feeding near the time you are handling are you? We've had young geckos that began to associate handling with being fed and then would confuse hands with food. For us, we have to turn on the room light to do either, so we turn it on, handle them, turn the light off, leave the room for a while, come back, turn the light on and feed. Then they don't think light on means food or that handling means when I go back into the enclosure there is food there.

Make sure it has plenty of hides too... sometimes they may feel too exposed and that can cause aggression, especially if you pick up the only hide to chase them out to handle them, they need to feel safe somewhere.

Just some random thoughts. Careful handling and time should settle him down.

All I had to do was see the word "Blizzard" to know what it is. Blizzards do tend to be more aggressive then other morphs, as well as snake eyes and eclipse. Why? I don't know. I have 5 blizzards and one stripe with snake eyes. The snake eye has calmed down a lot with age, but the Blizzards are still very fisty. Yesterday one of my female bilzzards took a chunk of skin off my finger. Out of the 63 leos I have the blizzard are the only ones like this. Some times I catch them on good days, but they are very few and far between. My male is a lot calmer than the females, and he is more talk than bite.
