? about hibernating outdoors

9boxies Nov 06, 2006 08:34 AM

Goodmorning all! Ok.....I am just a little nervous about this hibernating outside thing! When the turtles are kept indoors to hibernate I always kept the substrate misted so it wouldn't dry out and I would check on the turtles to make sure they were still alive. Now I am worrying about my turtles because they are outside in their pen and I am not sure what to do! Do I sprinkle the area off and on during the months to keep the place moist or what? We don't get much rain in this part of Texas so I am completely stumped here.

Also, since they are down in the soil and a lot deeper than they were in the garage in their boxes do you just leave them alone? You know....not bother them until they come up on their own say in March or April? I guess one just has to take a chance and have faith that all will turn out ok for them. I talked to a lady the other day who has turtles and has had them for over 35 years. They are in the backyard and she said she never worries about them or anything and all are always fine!

Maybe I am just worrying too much about nothing here. But I really would like to know if I should water the pen area during this time. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I hope all of you had a good week-end! Take care! ..........9boxies

I never water or anything of that nature during the winter months: mine go under and I don't bother them or do anything (except check for wanderers during warm spells) until spring. I find that the soil and leaf mixture that is in the hibernaculum here stays moist.

Thank-you for the quick response StephF. I really do appreciate it. Well.....I guess I better quit worrying about my shelled "children" then and relax until time for them to resurface. Thanks again! ........9boxies
