Females have the same size toepads on the front feet as they do on the back. Males are more 'fan-toed' on the front feet.
Females also have a more hunched back, whereas males are a bit flatter along the back.
There shouldn't be any problems introducing a mate.
Then there is the method that Dave from Ed's Fly meat suggested. He claims it works, but I've only seen it demonstrated with a known make. In a clear shipping cup with a little sphagnum moss, a male will elevate its head when the cup is rolled gently on its side. The females will apparently duck their heads.

I tried that, it didn't really work with mine, which are D. tinctorius.
The toes and hunchback are 100% though.
