Thought HE was a FEMALE but....

panui22 Nov 06, 2006 11:49 AM

For almost a year i thought my favorite normal female was just that a female. honestly she is one of the prettiest normals i've ever seen, really really high gold. when i first got her i got her probbed by a local reptile shop and she was a female...
8 months later, i learn how to sex ball pythons by poping from greg graziani. i go home to try what i've learned and sure enough my BP is now a male.

Sometimes when popping, if you really push hard you can get scent glands, females have them and they do resemble hemipenes, Females will also get plugs, which can be confussed with sperm. The easiest way to tell 100% sex on adult bals is probing, that is just my honest opinion. I have seen many scent glands pop out on my females, and they are all proven breeders

But scent glands look nothing like hemipenes. If done correctly probing and popping are both 100% accurate. I could possibly see mis-sexing a male as a female when popping an older animal but not the other way around. You either see hemipenes or you don't.

I looked into this slightly but when I tried it I thought I was putting too much pressure on the snake and didn't want to puch any harder in fear of damaging anything. Probing intimidates me because I think I would go too deep or again damage something and injure my snake.

I WOULD really like to know if it is a he or a she.

I wasted a year and a half growing a snake that I bought as a female...
only to have it turn out male.

I was soooooooooo angry...

I did the same. I didn't realize mine was a male until i put a 700gram albino male with "her". The albino FREAKED out. I called my friend and thats how we figured it out.

I realize that scent glands and hemipenes are worlds apart, but yuo would be very suprised. For someone who has never delt with scent glands if something large and red pops out they think male. I have seen many many many people incorrectly sex a snake due to female scent glands. That is all i am saying. If you know how to probe and pop correctly then yes they are 100 % accurate, But if you havent been doing it for awhile and are not experienced with it I do not feel either is 100%. With probes i have seen unexperienced people go to deep in a female injuring the animal and thinking it was a male, i have also seen people who dont put enough preasure when they pop and think they have all females, and like ive said i have seen many people that think scent glands indicate male. After years and years of experience it becomes second nature, but for beginners to sexing snakes I dont think it is 100% acurate all the times.
Just my opinion

Any sites that show how to pop?
