Need help understanding my snakes...

tsusnakeguy Nov 06, 2006 12:45 PM

Ok my BRB's spent one whole day hooked up and going at it. Then they seperated and my male went back in to the water bowl like he did before they started. Then he came out roamed around and they did nothing. He has done that 2 times now and has not hooked up either time he came out of the water. Should I seperate now or leave them together.

Also how does everyone go about cleaning and feeding females after they have mated and all. I don't want to put her under any stress if I can help it.

I would appreciate some help.

As long as there are no issues, leave them together. If you want to feed, seperate them, feed and keep seperate for several days. You will probably find they don't want any food, especially the female.

For feeding / cleaning. MINIMAL is best. Keep prey items small. (and that does not mean feed several smalls) If she eats one, that's enough until next time. I like to provide a damp hide. I use a sweater box with access holes cut into it. With damp moss in there, she will quickly make it her number one hang out place. You can remove her from the cage for cleaning by taking out the hide with her in it. IMO, handling is a no-no. While it might not hurt her, can't be good for her. That said, there are times when you will need to handle her, be gentle and provide good support.

Snakes in general are on again / off again breeders. They'll show interest for several days and then nothing for days, weeks or even months. Just because they're disintersted now doesn't mean they're through. I usually continue to cycle my females until 1) they're off feed and basking or 2) I'm sure no clutches are going to come from her that season. Night time lows into the high 60s and daytime highs in the mid 80s.

Cleaning and feeding females is done normally. I remove feces/urates from the cage with tongs and feed until they refuse. It may be a very good idea to remove your male 1-2 days before feeding the female. Let he digest for 1-2 days before reintroducing the male. This will give them a little break and prevent a double-feeding response.

Also, try introducing the male after he or she sheds or during a storm. This seems to kick things up a little.

I hope this helps. Let us know if you have more questions. There's plenty of time left in the breeding season so don't get nervous yet.
