Some of you may remember this story, at least the part up to this year. It's still a pretty cool story though.
Boo has been in my possession since 1994 and her first attempts at breeding were disastrous. I was learning how to care for them and provide optimal environment for breeding and was having success with my other females (off and on) but with Boo, her first three clutches were all total washouts. The (not-so) grand total for three years was no live babies, 62 slugs and 5 stillborn. Not exactly the kind of numbers you want to hear about. I decided she might be infertile and did not want her taking up valuable space in my colony. In the fall of 2003, after her third strike, she was put up for sale in a local show. She was for sale as a pet only, infertile female. I had a couple of ladies interested in her, even as a pet only. They both liked her but for different reasons, neither bought her. one strapped for cash and the other at her husbands "limit". The "limit" lady even called back several times after the show but never came through on the deal.
So now I still have this female that had never produced a live baby and now it's breeding season. With my breeding cage with tubes for connecting sections, I didn't have a separate place to keep her and let her breed again. Very glad I did, she had somehow gotten the message. That following year (2004) she gave me the largest litter I've ever had, 31 babies with no slugs at all. And she was not done, the following years (2005 and 2006) were each 26 babies and only 5 slugs in 2005.
To sum it up:
2001 - 2003, no babies, 62 slugs and 5 stills
2004 - 2006, 83 babies, 5 slugs and no stills
She has passed up all the others and is now in the lead as the female who has produced the most live babies for me!!!!!
And to think, I almost sold her!
