Mite Removal/Prevention

burton560 Nov 06, 2006 04:52 PM

Hello all,
I did some research online and from what I've read, the mite removers sold at petstores, like those made by zoo-med, don't really work. Does anybody know of a good method or product for preventing and/or removing snake mites?

There is only one thing that really works. Get a can of Provent-a-mite. It costs about $15 a can, but it will get rid of your mite problem, forever. I simply spray it in the litter of the cage and it kills the mites on the snake and in the cage. I change the litter in about 10 days and give it another quick spray and its done. No more mites.

I've used all the other stuff and won't ever bother any other way again.

What Chris said. I work in a pet store and it is the only thing that works. The rest eat money and then the mites are back.

Where do you guys buy your Provent-a-mite? The best price online I can find shipped to NY is around $24.

I usually get it at an expo somewhere. You can find it online for less than $24. Did you try www.pro-products.com/miteandtemp.html.

After you've eradicated the mites with Provent-a-Mite, don't bring in new additions to your collection.

Okay, if you do bring in new snakes, quarantine them and treat them with Provent-a-mite, too.

While Ivermectin (injectable@.2 mg/kg) or prepared as a spray (1/2cc to qt) work, I've found dichlovos to be more effective. This can be had at Home depot in the form of No Pest strips. Refer to Understanding Reptile Parasites (Roger J. Klingenberg D.V.M.) for use and dosage.
