Pyxie and Pacman feeding concerns...

Goomba Nov 06, 2006 05:08 PM

Alright, so I have a Argentinian Horned Frog and a African Giant Pyxie. I’ve had my pacman for over 2 months now and s/he has grown considerably. I used to feed him 3 worms every other day, and he really got quite massive pretty quickly. Recently, it seems that he has gotten over a growth/ eating spurt, and now he burrows, and comes out occasionally for a worm or two, or once in a while a frozen fuzzy, etc. He no longer touches the crickets that he used to devour when he was younger, it’s as if he’s too lazy. On average, he’ll eat about 4 worms a week perhaps. Is this a trend? Or is it a normal decrease in appetite as he matures?

On the other hand, I’ve had my pyxie for about a month, maybe a bit more. Im confident he’s a male due to the fact that he was the biggest and most robust of his siblings. He has already triples in size, and can eat a medium mouse (which ofcourse I only feed on occasion). But to put his appetite into persective, over the last 4 days he ate 25 large crickets, 2 large nightcrawlers, and a frozen fuzzy....I realize these frogs have quite the appetite, and I love it, but seeing this guy eat so much gets me worried abotu my pacman. I mean, my pyxie will aggressively charge anythign when hungry, no problem, hell devour it. But my pacman on the other hand, will sit still and motionless, and sometimes I have to dangle food in front of him for a minute or so. Are pacman frogs just naturally pickier eaters?
But either way, Im loving both of these frogs, both are so different, but the pyxie is definately the maniac of the two.

You didn't mention what kind of setup you have. If you live an area where the weather is starting to get cooler, your pacman frog may just be noticing the change and is slowly losing appetite to prepare for estivation. Also, depending on the size of your african bullfrog, sounds like you may be overfeeding.

Well, the thing is, I live in Arizona, so it's not cold by anymeans. And I constantly have a 25w bulb on for them. So yea, though it is cooling down, I dont think it's drastic, afterall, my pyxie isnt affected by it, infact, it seems that his appetite has grown.

pacman frogs are ambush predetors that sit in one spot (usually buried half way into the substrate) and wait for insects to crawl by.
