Burrowing male panther...

StonedReptiles Nov 06, 2006 08:49 PM

Hello everyone. I woke up this morning and went to check on my chams as usual and noticed something very strange. My male panther is currently in a cage where there is about 8" of soil that is used for egglaying when the females are ready. This morning i looked into the cage to find my male panther chameleom inside of a burrow that he dug himself, and he's still going. Has anyone ever seen this behavior in male panthers? Any ideas of what might be going on in his little brain? He is completely healthy, so I'm not worried, I just wanted to share this with everyone. Thanks.

I've never see that behavior in any of my male chams, adult or otherwise.
How old is your male? Old enough you're certain of gender?
And this may sound like another dumb question, but do you house your male with sexually mature females? I assume not, since you state he dug the burrow himself.
I wouldn't think he could smell or otherwise detect the presence of a gravid female that had previously used that laying site, and is therefore looking for her...

My brain may only be slightly larger than a cham's, but I still don't know what's going on in his little brain! LOL

I hope someone with a better answer can shed some light!

He's about a year and a half. The only animal to lay in the container since the soil was changed is a veiled female. The behavior makes no sense to me. One of my friends joked that he is digging holes so that when females come into his cage they may see his holes and want to stay.

Wow that is bizarre behaviour for a male. What's the humidity in the enclosure - could he be looking for a cooler, damper place to hang out? He's very handsome. Dont suppose you have offspring available?
