BP off feed...time of year??....

-ryan- Nov 06, 2006 10:20 PM

My ball python has been an avid feeder since I got him as a baby in february, but three weeks ago he took two mice and has seemed uninterested in eating since then. He's still active at night, but won't touch his mice. Does this have to do with the time of year (could he already be going into winter shutdown?), or is it something I should worry about?

It is time for winter shutdown, depending on where you live in the country. No worries!!

I live in rochester ny. If you're not familiar with the climate, by this time of year it's already coat weather, and there's been very small amounts of snow-fall. The days are really short right now. His temps remain fairly confident but I suppose other environmental cues could be causing him to go into shutdown.

Is there a reason he's still active even though he's not eating? Is he going to calm down after a bowel movement or something.

Sorry, this is my first BP, and I just don't really understand this process yet.

Thanks for the info.

The "shutdown" doesn't mean they go into hibernation. They just stop eating and start looking for snake sex . He'll be fine. If he hasn't got a mate you might continue to try and feed every couple weeks or so just to see if he'll take it.

So it's not the 'shutdown' that some of my other reptiles go into. It's more just a reaction to the arrival of what would be mating season?

'Looking for snake sex'. That made me laugh! Horny little snake.

Thanks for the info. Again, only my first year with the little guy, so I don't know what to expect.
