Feeding issues...again...

Orocosos Nov 06, 2006 10:32 PM

Okay...so, I'm back again with the same question. My snake is refusing to eat again. He hasn't eaten since October 12, and I normally feed him a thawed mouse every week. I observed him drinking today, and he does not seem dehydrated. He burrows frequently under the substrate, but when he emerges he is active and does not seem stressed. I tried to feed him a new mouse today, and he seemed interested in it, but he did not eat it. Here's a picture of my setup. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing him to refuse food (again)?

Probably just letting you know it's time to start shutting down for winter. My WC Cal King will begin to eat smaller meals in September and then eventually refuse food altogether.

Are your snakes generally active before they "shut down" for the winter? Mine is still active. He does not refuse food annually.

The heat gradient runs from 80 on the warm side to 72-ish on the cool side.

Sounds quite normal. That is what most Cal kings do during Winter. Go ahead and cover the cage sides with something to darken it, and either cool the cage down to 55-65 deg F or just leave a small basking area in an otherwise cool cage. He should be fine until Jan Feb or so.
