Ok this is bugging me...

So males and females of various species tend to have classic names to designate gender:

Pigs: Boars and sows
Cows: Bulls and Heifers
Dogs: Studs(?) and well...B**ches

Do tortoises have this sort of denomination? I can't seem to find it anywhere...

I have been doing this hobby over 50 years and the only gender-specific terms I have ever seen used for turtles and tortoises are male, female, sire and dam. On the other hand, did you know that a group of tortoises is more properly called a "bale" than a herd?

Mr.Zovic,Can you tell me the origin of the term "bale" being a group of tortoises.I'd like to put it in a book.vic

Actually a group of tortoises is a creep, a group of turtles is a bale, bevy, nest, dule or turn

Not sure of the origins of creep for a group of tortoises though.
