a breeding question

jndspendolini Nov 08, 2006 12:22 AM

we were just wondering if either the male or the female lose interest in breeding if the female gets preg...we had active breeding between both sets of our columbian x central americans, and how neither pair looks like they want to breed...one of our females is showing some difference in her girth and we are hoping it is because she is knocked up...let us know if you can think of anything...

thanks

the big male i have used in the past will breed a female like carzy , then all of a sudden like flicking a swith he looses interest in breeding the female , i guess he knows when the job is done and any more couting will just be a waste of time

I think the general rule of thumb is to keep the male in until he doesn't show interest for a whole WEEK straight (because he will get tired even if he's not done breeding and take a day or two "off". If he stops showing interest for a week or more, he's probably done and you get to play the waiting game!

I have a male who has what I consider a wierd breeding process. This is his first year breeding, so I don't know what to expect. I introduced him to the female 10-14-06, he was courting by the 16th. I think I saw copulation a few times, but who knows. He bred for about 5 days straight, then took a break for a week. After his nap, went for another 4 days, and is resting again right now. I have no intentions of pulling him out yet, in my opinion it seems too soon. Any opinions/comments?

When in doubt ... leave him in. Won't hurt anything.
