Cage floor

bradsradreps Nov 08, 2006 07:22 AM

has any one ever used tile for the floor of their cage? I'm trying to think of way to cover the bottom of a home made built plywood floor to protect the wood and I thought of using tile or per haps even a shower curtain. Both would have aspen bedding on top, that's why I was thinking of using the shower curtain, bc it's lighter and cheaper and look wouldn't matter since it would be covered up.

How about laminate (formica) or vinyl flooring (linoleum (sp))?

Also, some people use tileboard, which is a tub-surround material that looks like tile and has a waterproof coating on one side. It's pretty inexpensive. You just need to make sure to caulk around the edges with silicone.

You could also probably use those self-adhesive vinyl tiles.

Ceramic tile would probably be overkill (and VERY HEAVY). I tried that (ungrouted, just laid in a cage) once and it didn't work well. Grouted and set, it would make for a very heavy hard to move cage, though I'm sure it would be waterproof then.

A shower curtain would be hard to manage, I think. You might even want to try vinyl contact paper, though I don't know how long that would last on a cage floor (I know people have used it on cage walls/ceiling before though).

Tileboard to the contrary is not waterproof nor is it water resistant. Tileboard is essentially a hardwood core melamine laminated 1/8" panel.

You can however look for smooth Fiberglass panels, FRP, or showerboard (designed for use in showers) to take the place of what Lauren said for tileboard.

Good Luck

Ah. I thought tileboard was water resistant on one side (which is why you have to caulk the edges so nothing gets behind it). I haven't actually used it myself though, showerboard sounds much better.

Tileboard is often right there with showerboard at home improvement stores so it's easy to confuse the two. It is best to make sure you are actually getting a product rated for use as a shower liner. The ones that Jeremy mentioned are not that much more expensive, at least the last time I checked. They look nicer as well for those that might use them in visible parts of the cage.

thank you all very much for the info. I was thinking Tile because i could get some for free, but haven't checked to see how much I'd need and the resulting weight, but those other ideas sound much better and I will give those a try. Thanks a lot!
