Getting assumed males in the mood???

SnakeSmith Nov 08, 2006 12:30 PM

I've got a pastel male(?) that probes about 5 scales deep. This male shows no interest in breeding and I have another male that was courting him/her(?). What I was aiming for was a little male combat as seen in the Sutherlands video to get him breeding with a female or two.
It would pretty nice to find out it's actually a female, but wanted to know if any of you have had luck with male combat as a way to get them breeding? Also, is the combat usually immediate upon introduction of the males?

Thanks,
Glenn

Last season I had a "female" that was readily breeding my albino male -- well I decided to back him up with my pastel male - and when I put my pastel in with "her" they immediately started to combat. After several re probings and finally calling in my expert popper I found out that she was actually a he.

The moral of the story is that just because you put two males together -- doesn't necessarily mean they will combat -- and it's as likely that they may end up breeding for dominance. LOL.

I've also heard that if you combat males the looser may actually not breed afterwards. Personally I wouldn't do it just because after seeing it happen once I felt bad for my snakes - kinda like watching your dog get mauled by another dog kinda feeling.

Being mauled??? The Sutherlands video certainly gave the impression there is no harm at all in this. If I had reason to think otherwise, I would'nt have bothered. The entire time period they were together was about 30 minutes, and I got courting rather than any sort of combat.

Ive never had to do that but try puting a different males shed in the tub with the other male. Ive head that works from a couple other breeders.

Sorry I was going to add this to the bottom of my other response but hit the button to quick ...

1. Put the shed of another male in with the breeding couple

2. Rub sperm plugs of another snake on the female

3. When you introduce them spray them down

4. This might just be one of those old wives tales but: There is some mens cologne (I forget which one) that has a pheromone in it .. supposedly it works well with the snakes too.

Tosha,

I've done #3, but have'nt tried #'s 1 or 2 of your recommendations. The cologne thing sounds pretty funny and I'm not that insisting that he does the deed to try it.

Thanks again for your reply,
Glenn
