Has been taking alot of our time and Love lately, one of our Old english sheepdog pups (the female) DANDI, began to limp a few months back after any kind of hard play or running.

She was diognosed with hip dysplasia, and has been needing water therapy ( underwater treadmill) Shes put into a large tank of water and walks on a treadmill a couple times a week.
Also needs to do some home exercises each day!

Hopefully this will strengthen her ligiments and muscle to compensate for her hip bone not fitting into the socket properly.
If the therapy and medicines do not help, she will need a hip operation. She's too young now, (not fully developed) so we have to work hard and at least TRY this way first. She wants to be able to RUN one day with her handsome brother.

Anyway that's where alot of my time is spent these days.

SHE and her brother Bear are just TOO important to us, and so very CUTE, that it is TOP PRIORITY right now.

So I pop in here when I can.

Our puppy just had knee surgery and we found out that she (rottie x lab mix) was born with her hip never in the socket! She's almost a year old and you could not tell there was anything wrong with her. Rotties are known for hip displasia apparently. My sister in law had the dog in the car and had to slam on her brakes because some idiot had cut them off. Well the dog fell forward and knocked her kneecap out of place. Xrays were taken and you could see the hip wasn't in the socket. It wasn't until the vet had cut the dog open to work on fixing the knee that he found out her hip had never been in the socket to begin with. Which did explain why she wasn't growing to her full size/weight potential. Right now she is in a full cast up to her hip for 3 weeks to stabalize the knee, then she'll be put into a soft cast for a few more weeks. Later once she's old enough the vet will have to go back in and fix the hip... something about cutting part of the knob off and using filler and stuff.

Oh your puppy is a cutie too, I sure hope the knee heals fast and her hip will be fine also. Such a shame, these 2 are so dang young to go through this hip stuff.

Dandi walked with a wobbley lil bottom, very early, I noticed her gait was not right, but everyone said she was just a small pup and walked cute. Then as she put on some weight and played harder she started to drag her back leg, we knew it was not good. They have her on Rimadyl and (human /osteo- bi flex)
and the only time she really crys out, is if you flex the hip , lift it.

Some days she gets tierd and does not put her weight on her back legs, and sorta hunches her back and puts the weight on the front, they do NOT want her to do that. Hopfully the water therapy will help that.

Sorry to hear about your puppy, and yes Rotties are known for hip displasia too. Just like the Old English sheepies, they get pretty big, and can weigh 100 lbs or so.

Let me know how your furkid makes out, I'll be thinking of her.

Boy, she's all legs, isn't she? Too cute, all lanky like that.

I sure hope you guys can avoid surgery. That seems to be a frighteningly common problem in purebred and large breed dogs.
