Reptile Shows and boa prices

carl3 Nov 08, 2006 06:01 PM

I finally did my first reptile show last weekend and could not believe I didn't sell one boa. Not only did I fail to sell them.. ...BUT other vendors were having trouble too and selling boas SO cheap. In fact, I almost bought one of the cleanest hypos I'd ever seen for only $100 from another vendor!!??!? Insane!

Anyway, maybe I would've done better had the new reptile magazine been out already.lol I had a few very nice Nicaraguan boas which I'll probably simply keep for myself. I made just enough off my 06 pair of n.pines to buy frozen mice...I still had a blast though and had a chance to network with other vendors. I also managed to pick up some Armadillo lizards and a pastel male ball python in a trade. I wish I had more snakes to sell...since I met a TON of people and had loads of fun and would love to do another show.

Hi Jason!!! Where have you been hiding?

What show was it?

My first show was the same way. I sold a mean honduran milk and had lots of people look at my boas. I still had fun though, had a lot of time to talk to the other breeders. I actually can't wait to do my next show!

I think that there's kind of a lull in the boa market right now (just a personal observation...I don't have any facts to back this up). I went to a show here last week and I didn't see many people walking out with boas...just colubrids.

Haha...I've been hiding in my snake room.lol...A slave to cleaning and feeding. Plus, I got a TON of new critters lately...some of which I'm keeping in my classroom at school in somewhat natural setups.

It was the All Maryland Reptile Show. A very nice show...small and quiet and NOT overcrowded. I can't wait to do another one!

I agree...the boa market has hit a speed bump. In fact, if you look at the number of classified pages...the boa classifieds are spread out over 7 pages, while the corn snake classifieds are only 1 and a half pages.lol. Does this mean anything? maybe. maybe not.lol.... I think the new boa article in Reptiles magazine will spur some people to go out and buy boas but who knows. A friend had a table at the NARBC Chicago show and had the most amazing bolivians and no one bought any! lol. Maybe its still a secret about how awesome boas are.
