OMG plz help tail fell off

reptigurl Aug 07, 2003 08:21 AM

I no that leopard geckos lose their tails when its tuged or they feel threatened and ive been really careful, but today i was moving the water dish/hide to change the water and i thought that my gecko was in another hide but when i moved the dish her tail must have got caught and it came off the tail remained moving and i am goin to remove it from the tank obviously. I no that geckos store most of their fat in their tail so i should feed my lizard more during the regrowth, but my lizard didnt have that fat of a tail to begin with and i've had her for less then two weeks. So if anyone has had any experience with this i would like all the help i can get. I'm kind of a beginner to herps and even though i knew that the tail could fll of it still freaked me out and I'm not exactly sure what to do. Is it normal for the lizard to bleed a bit when it drops its tail and for the tail to move around the tank afterwards? Will my lizard become more shy because of this insident? just for some starter questions. PLEASE respond if you have any advise
thanx,
mal

hey, first off after losing her tail you need to keep her tank very clean to prevent infection, second,it wouldn't hurt since she lost her food storage to offer her a bit more food, and i had my day geckos tail fall off yesterday, there wasn't any blood, but i'm not saying that it wouldn't be normal if there was,oh also if she's on any kind of sand,i'd suggest you switch her over to paper towel until it heals(you don't want sand sticking to the wound, lol, and don't worry she won't hold it against you

my gecko is too small for sand so i have a cage carpet substrate and i wont have to get rid of it. Thanx for the advise, but do u know how long after the "incident" i should wait to feed her? i dont want to stress her out too much right away, but i know that it is important to increase the amount of food i give her.
thank,
mal

i honestly don't think it'd hurt to let her eat right away, just make sure you feed her at least once a day for now,and if you want to eliminate stress just feed her as many as she'll eat,it'd probably also be a good idea to keep a dish of crickets and buy a gut-load supplement at you pet store, and let your crickets eat the gut-load,for extra vitamins and nutrients for your baby ) hope this helped
