New to Uro's and have some ?

Mychelle Nov 09, 2006 08:12 AM

Hey all. I got a baby uro yesterday, and I although I think I am doing alot of it ok, I still have questions. His temps are around 113 on the basking spot (is this hot enough?) and around 90 at the cool end. Also have a uvb light for him.

Some questions I can't find answers to: Do they climb much? He runs around alot, but he hasn't really climbed on any of his rocks. Also, what kind of "treats" can he have, other than insects. I thought they could have fruits, but I can't find anything about it.
Thanks!

Glad that you have a new uro. They are alot of fun! First, they don't really climb very much, except for a few who really enjoy it. They like to run and encouraging them to climb is good for keeping them busy and happy, but more importantly, they love to dig and hide. The temps seem alright, although I would suggest trying to stack rocks, so that the top is closer to 120 degrees, but there is a range of warm temps. It helps them regulate their own body temp.

As for treats, they love dandilions! Take a walk before it gets too cold and find a few. They are a much healthier treat than insects and can be fed to your uro frequently. My guy used to like strawberries in small amounts, but he grew into loving bitter things.

Good luck and enjoy!
