When are BP's ready to breed?

pythonmikey420 May 20, 2003 05:48 PM

Hello! I have always kept and breed snakes...mainly colubrids. I just now got into pythons. I have a pair of yearling BP's that I have had for about 2 months. I do house them together. At what age will they both be ready to breed and when they are ready...what do I need to do to get them ready? Thanx for the help

Mikey:
Get a copy of "The Ball Python Manual" by AVS. It is available in any GOOD petshop that sells herps or mail order.
It's only about $10.
Basically, sexual maturity is a function of age AND WEIGHT.
However old they are when the males reach 500gm (a little over one pound) and females reach 1500gm (about 3 1/3 pounds)(a safe minimum weight for females) they are mature. SJM

Here's a tip: if you put them together, and they don't boink, it's not time, hehe.

Usually about 3 yrs for the female, and about 3 1/2 feet long (1500g, as the other person said).

Males, well, less, obviously. They don't have to produce eggs and babies, stop eating for months, then incubate the babies. So, no need for them to be as large.

So, you have a ways to go before your girl's ready to do anything.
