If you can, I recommend setting them up on a substrate that holds burrows. I had my Egyptians on birdseed for a while and switched the substrate to a local soil that holds burrows well. They're much more active now and have created a really interested network of tunnels. The substrate is about 2 feet in depth.

A horse trough makes for a great enclosure if you chose to give this a try. These guys burrow in the wild and I believe this to be a more naturalistic setting. It's also fun to observe them in this environment. Good luck!

Although I am a fellow Soil user I don't know if I would recommend it to people new to Uros, not even sand for that matter. During the learning process I'd stick to safe things like millet, paper towels, or some kind of carpet.
